The Laboratory of Biochemistry was founded by Ioannis Georgatsos in 1976. The members of the Laboratory participate in undergraduate teaching programs of the Departments of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biology and in postgraduate programs of the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. In the context of these programs, Laboratory members have trained a large number of postgraduate and graduate students, while they have supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations.

The Laboratory has well-equipped facilities for biochemical and molecular biology research. Specifically, it is equipped with a tissue culture facility containing laminar air-flows, CO2 incubators, cell counters, electroporator, Elisa reader, phase contrast and fluorescence microscope and reverse phase contrast microscope, all types of incubators for bacteria growth, sonicator, sterilizers, Polymerase Chain Reaction devices, centrifuges and ultracentrifuge, cold rooms, freezers -20 °C, -80 °C, liquid nitrogen, clean water system, waterbaths and a variety of magnetic stirrers with or without heating. The Laboratory is also licensed for experiments with isotopes (32P).

  • Protein synthesis, structure and function of ribosomal proteins, assembly of ribosomal subunits, effect of antibiotics
  • Molecular mechanisms that regulate chromatin attachment to the nuclear envelope – Mechanisms that direct heterochromatin formation
  • Oxidative stress
  • DNA damage, Comet assay studies, assessment of histone H2AX phosphorylation (γH2AX), poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)
  • Iron transport mechanisms – Iron transporters
  • Single molecule studies using biochemical, molecular biology and biophysical approaches
  • Enzyme purification and function
